Hate incidents that target Muslims have been increasing at an unprecedented rate in our country. The ICJS recognizes an urgent need to confront Islamophobia through interreligious education and engagement. This three-part series begins with the lecture “Banning shariah.” Many U.S. state legislatures have discussed or passed legislation banning the use of shariah (Islamic religious law) in courts with little awareness of how religious law functions in Muslim communities.
The first speaker, and the 2017 Manekin-Clark Lecturer, Dr. Anver Emon will provide a brief introduction to shariah and argue that shariah bans are a dangerous political tool that positions American Muslims as threats to democracy and American values.
