Bring Me A Book Foundation

Founded in 1993, Seeds of Peace is dedicated to empowering young leaders from regions of conflict with the leadership skills required to advance reconciliation and coexistence.Over 450 teenagers participate in Seeds of Peace each summer. The Peace Fleece office is a barn on a sheep farm in Maine. Peter Hagerty and his wife Marty Tracy started buying wool from the Soviet Union back in 1985 in hopes that through trade they could help diffuse the threat of nuclear war. Since then they have worked with shepherds in Russia, Kyrgyzia, Israel and the West Bank, as well as in Montana, Ohio, Texas and Maine. By working with people who tend livestock every day, they hope to find a common ground that slowly leads to mutual understanding and economic interdependence. After twenty-one years, their goals remain the same.

Winning titles include fiction, nonfiction, and poetry written for students in grades K-12. The winning titles each year are announced at the International Reading Association Convention. An article describing the selections is included in the fall issue of The Dragon Lode.
The first list was published in 1996. Dr. Yvonne Siu-Runyan is the IRA CL/R SIG member who conceived the idea and shepherded the creation of this award list.

This organization began in 1992 with an all volunteer staff and seven children in Sioux City, IA. In a 1500-word essay, state what you believe are the necessary elements for the development of fair, peaceful, or effective use of natural resources after a conflict. Analyze two case studies that illustrate your arguments by selecting two foreign conflicts in which natural resources have played a part. Of the two foreign conflict situations, at least one must have begun in or after 1999. Describe the role natural resources played in each conflict.
- Explain how the issues of natural resources were resolved or attempted to be resolved in the settling of each conflict.
- What are the similarities and differences between the two cases you have chosen?
- Was one settlement more successful than the other? Why?
- Based on your analysis, give your recommendations for how countries coming out of conflict can resolve issues around natural resources in order to build a lasting peace, and how the international community can help in that effort.

Peace Around the World" is the theme of the 2007-08 Peace Poster Contest. Lions clubs can sponsor the program in their community for children in local schools or organized, sponsored youth groups. Students, ages 11, 12 or 13 on November 15, are eligible to participate. Through the contest, students are encouraged to visually depict their interpretation of the contest's theme.
